Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven received a major spotlight during Xbox’s May 6 showcase, revealing Snoop Dogg as Orpheus, a smuggler and mentor figure who helps guide protagonist Makoto Daito’s musical rise in 1915 San Francisco.

Rap legend Snoop Dogg is joining the voice cast for Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s upcoming ambitious title, Stranger Than Heaven. During a 30-minute Xbox showcase on May 6, fans finally got a deeper look at what RGG Studio has been developing, and it’s a mashup of show business drama, action, music, and half a decade’s worth of Japanese history. Also joining the VA roster are Snoop Dogg’s son Cordell Broadus, Tori Kelly, and J-pop idol Satoshi Fujihara.

Finally, RGG has given us a deeper look into Stranger Than Heaven’s story, and it’s pretty interesting. The story centers on Makoto Daito, a half-American, half-Japanese man who heads to San Francisco in 1915 for a new start. He tags along with his friend Yu Shinjo and eventually crosses paths with Orpheus, the smuggler voiced by Snoop Dogg.

In an Xbox Wire post, Snoop Dogg brings Orpheus’s role to life in Stranger Than Heaven by nurturing Makoto’s hidden musical talent. Cordell Broadus spoke during the showcase and said:

“Orpheus realizes in that moment that maybe what he’s destined to deliver are the lives of these two boys.”

Snoop Dogg’s Character Orpheus is Basically a Hustling Manager in Stranger Than Heaven

Snoop Dogg also described his role and stated, “I play Orpheus, an international smuggler who only has one rule: taking what’s meant to be where it’s meant to be. If you want it, I can get it for you.”

Tori Kelly, who’s also worked on Stranger Than Heaven’s OST, stated, “This collision of East and West results in a unique era that exudes both optimism and melancholy; showbiz’s customs and culture turn out to be just as cutthroat as those of the underworld.”

Stranger Than Heaven aims to weave music into the experience, so expect some banging soundtracks and background music as players venture through Makoto’s days as he scouts talent and tries to find new tunes to produce original tracks.

A massive part of the gameplay involves managing venues and shows, picking talent and performers, managing setlists, and putting on gigs, akin to the mini-games seen in the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series.

A focus on melee combat

However, Stranger Than Heaven, being an RGG game, doesn’t skimp on bare-knuckle and melee combat, featuring fluid animations that seem fresh and physical. Players can independently control both sides of Makoto’s body, blocking attacks with one arm and performing a timed counter with the other, or using both triggers to tackle enemies.

The showcase also hinted that the game has deeper ties to the Yakuza universe, suggesting it could serve as a prequel or origin story for elements seen in RGG’s hit titles.
