How Dobby is brought to life could play an important role in the success of the Harry Potter series. After all, the house-elf ranks high among many fans’ favorite characters. One question in particular is on Potterheads’ minds: will Dobby be brought to life through animatronics or CGI?

While most of the main cast has already been confirmed, fans still do not know what to expect from one of the story’s most popular characters: Dobby. Will the house-elf appear as CGI, as he did in the Warner Bros. movies, or could an animatronic puppet be used? The latter worked well for Grogu from The Mandalorian. The topic is currently being discussed on Reddit.

Most fans agree that they do not want Dobby to be an animatronic puppet. That may have worked well for Baby Yoda, especially because the character barely speaks and moves very little. Dobby, however, has to talk, walk and gesture. The lovable house-elf also relies heavily on facial expressions and fans fear that an animatronic Dobby could quickly look unnatural.

Potterheads would therefore prefer an animated Dobby in the HBO series. A motion-capture solution, similar to Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, would be conceivable. In that case, an actor would provide the movements, body language and facial expressions, which would then be transferred to the digital character via CGI. This could make Dobby’s gestures and expressions appear more natural.

Many fans still consider a Dobby puppet useful on set, though not as the final version of the character. Instead, it could serve as a reference point for the actors, giving them something tangible to look at and react to. In the original films, a stick with a tennis ball was used for this purpose so the actors knew where to look. A Dobby stand-in would likely make it easier for the cast to immerse themselves in each scene.

It may be some time before fans get concrete answers about how Dobby will be brought to life. The house-elf does not appear until the second book, meaning he will probably not be seen in HBO’s series until a later season. However, a CGI version currently seems fairly likely.
