An embarrassing bug, mocking comments and fear of theft: a Reddit discussion shows why many players still feel uncomfortable gaming in public, despite the boom around the Steam Deck and similar handhelds.

Large gaming handhelds such as the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go are now firmly established in the gaming scene. Even so, many users still feel self-conscious using them in public. This is shown by a current Reddit discussion started by user u/AddictinApple, who shared a negative experience. While playing on his Steam Deck on the school bus, he heard other passengers say: “Look at that idiot, he’s playing a Nintendo Switch.”

One particularly unpleasant story drew both laughter and sympathy: user u/hiimatlas was playing L.A. Noire with headphones on an early-morning train. Due to a known Steam Deck bug, however, the sound was also coming through the speakers. Police sirens and game audio filled the train while others were trying to sleep – for a full hour, until an elderly gentleman pointed out that the game was too loud. Since then, he says he has been especially nervous about playing in public.

Many users advise worrying less about other people’s looks or comments. Most people barely pay attention to what others are doing on the bus, train or in a waiting room anyway. Still, gaming in public can carry a negative aftertaste if someone has once been labeled a “nerd” for it or experienced an embarrassing moment.

Another factor that spoils mobile gaming for many Steam Deck owners is the fear of theft. After all, the Steam Deck is large, conspicuous and not exactly cheap. In a café or on a train, there is a real risk that someone could simply grab the device and run off. Even so, many still see the Steam Deck as the perfect travel companion – although they are more likely to use it in a hotel. Many users also feel comfortable using their handheld on airplanes, where the risk of theft seems low. Readers are welcome to share their own experiences in the comments.
