Fans decry Lego Sega Genesis citing lack of detail and unfavorable comparisions with NES set

Lego and Sega have collaborated on a new brick-built tribute set for the iconic Sega Genesis console. The Sega Genesis Lego set, numbered 40926, lets builders recreate the classic 16-bit home console brick by brick with 479 pieces, two detachable Lego controllers, a plug-in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cartridge, and stickers. However, the model is relatively small, measuring 6 inches by 4.5 inches. It is priced at an affordable $39.99 / £34.99 / €39.99 and is set to hit store shelves on June 1, 2026.
However, following the reveal of the Lego Sega Genesis set, many fans of Sega’s 16-bit-era home console took to the internet to share their frustration. It wasn’t all excitement, as many were hoping for a bigger, more detailed Lego set, similar to Lego’s Nintendo Entertainment System set, which features 2,646 pieces, a Mario figure, a Lego CRT TV, and originally retailed for $230 before collectors pushed it considerably higher.
Instead, many Sega fans felt disappointed by the Lego Sega Genesis reveal, as they ended up with something considerably smaller and less detailed than expected. Some fans even noted they would have been willing to spend extra money for a higher-quality Sega Genesis set.
An unimpressed fanbase that expected a premium offering
On r/Legoleak, one fan wrote, “I am so disappointed by this. After the NES and Atari sets, I really thought they would bring the heat.” Others pointed out that the set was far smaller than they felt it should be and questioned why Lego didn’t treat it as a premium adult set.
To make the comparison even worse, Lego released a standalone Sega Genesis Controller set (40769) in September 2025, featuring 260 pieces and offered as a “Gift With Purchase” item for orders over $150. It was a more faithful recreation of the Sega Genesis controller, making some feel the upcoming offering might be inferior in terms of detail versus already available alternative. The detachable controllers in the new Lego Sega Genesis set, as noted by some, pale in comparison to that more faithful recreation released in September 2025.
Still, things don’t seem entirely negative, especially considering the price point Lego offers for this particular unit. The Sega Genesis Lego set includes some nice touches, like printed scuff marks for a worn retro look, a Sonic Easter egg, and a collection of stickers to switch between either Sega Genesis or Mega Drive regional styling.
