Sega’s newly titled Virtua Fighter Crossroads marks the franchise’s first original mainline entry in nearly two decades, with producer-director Riichiro Yamada saying the team avoided the Virtua Fighter 6 name to signal a broader creative reset.

Sega has officially dubbed the New Virtua Fighter Project as Virtua Fighter Crossroads, marking the series’ return as an original mainline entry for the first time in nearly twenty years. Virtua Fighter Crossroads is currently scheduled for release in 2027. New footage was shown in a world-premiere trailer at Summer Game Fest 2026, followed by a standalone showcase introducing a story mode set in the Southeast Asian city of Villasapara.

Amid the hype for Virtua Fighter Crossroads, developed in collaboration by RGG Studio and Sega AM2, producer and director Riichiro Yamada explained the decision to drop the numbering sequence in a recent interview with Automaton.

Many had assumed, both inside and outside Sega, that the game would be called Virtua Fighter 6, but that’s no longer the case. Yamada wanted something different, stating:

“Personally, however, I had a strong desire to create something new and simply didn’t want it to inherit the numbering.” Given that Crossroads marks a major turning point for the franchise after two decades with a redesigned logo and hyper-realistic arcade fighting, this approach makes sense.

A focus on single-player drives development

Yamada also wanted to bring something new to the table: a robust single-player campaign. Since Virtua Fighter Crossroads is being released for home consoles rather than arcades, Yamada felt the development teams should add more than just a token story mode. He stated:

“I believe it would be pointless unless we delivered a substantial single-player experience.” As seen in gameplay footage and teaser trailers, Virtua Fighter’s combat appears slightly more realistic than Tekken 8 or Street Fighter 6. To achieve this level of realism, Sega brought in notable talent like Brad Kane, who worked on Ghost of Tsushima and was reportedly selected via an anonymous script audition.

What’s even more surprising is that the worldbuilding supervisor for Virtua Fighter Crossroads is none other than Solid Snake’s voice actor, David Hayter, who is currently crafting the game’s lore and overseeing the story.

The narrative dream team cherry-picked by Sega consists of lead writer Brad Kane, scenario director Tsuyoshi Furuta from the Like a Dragon and Judgment series, and Shinki Yamamoto, who has worked on Atlus’s Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series.
