Elegoo launches Centauri Carbon 2 Combo for budget multicolor 3D printing
Following up last year’s budget core XY enclosed offering, the Centauri Carbon (CC), Elegoo has launched the successor with some neat upgrades. The Centauri Carbon 2 Combo (CC 2) supports multicolor 3D printing, a feature that was planned for the original CC but never made it to the public. The CC 2 however, brings Elegoo at par with the competition but still maintains its budget friendly approach.
Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo, what’s changed?
In terms of the printer's overall design, the CC 2 looks just like the original CC but comes with some key improvements, including the new Canvas system with RFID detection. This allows up to four color printing and filament auto loading, along with auto detection of the color and type of filament. Of course, the auto detection only works with Elegoo’s own RFID filament spools. The multicolor implementation is different from some of the other popular brands such as Bambu’s AMS or Creality’s CMS, and there is no dedicated filament box. All four spools are fixed to the side of the printer leading into the Canvas system which feeds four PTFE tubes to the hotend.
The touchscreen on the outside is now larger at 5 inches (4.3 inches on the CC). The hardened steel nozzle can now reach 350 degrees C (320 degree C on CC) and the auto leveling is about 14% faster, Elegoo claims. At the same time, it is advertised to be quieter as well at 45 dB vs around 55 dB for the CC. Furthermore, Elegoo has also taken a page out of the premium Bambu Lab offerings and added auto opening vents that adjust chamber airflow. Filaments like PLA that don't need very high temperatures can be printed with the vents open.
With the changes and upgrades aside, the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo retains the build volume of the original at 256 x 256 x 256 mm. The max print speed and acceleration are also the same at 500 mm/s and 20,000 mm/s2, respectively. There is also a camera for live monitoring but the resolution and frame rate details are unavailable at this point.
