Creality Filament Maker M1/Shredder R1: Desktop solution for recycling 3D printing waste

Everyone who owns a 3D printer or works closely with one knows there can be a lot of wasted filament, be it purge-related or failed prints. Especially with the onset of multi-color printing, filament waste has increased significantly, even though now companies are trying to minimize this waste. While there are third-party solutions to recycle this wasted filament, Creality has made the solution more personal and desktop-friendly with the Filament Maker M1 and Shredder R1.
Officially announced early last month, the Filament Maker M1 and Shredder R1 offer a desktop recycling and filament extrusion system that can produce reusable filament from waste. The Shredder R1 can break down the wasted filament (currently only PLA and PETG), as long as it fits in the machine’s intake, and spit out fragments that can then be put in the Filament Maker M1.
It takes in the scrap fragments mixed with some fresh pellets and, with precise temperature control, melts down the waste to extrude it onto a new empty spool. It can maintain a consistent diameter between 1.65 mm and 1.80 mm with pellets and waste filament, but get even more accurate with 100% pellets. It also opens up the possibility of custom-colored filaments.
There have been DIY solutions for recycling filament waste, but they are a lot more manual and less reliable. Third-party solutions involve sending the waste filament to someone else who would then recycle the filament, which would not return to the original user. The Filament Maker M1 and Shredder R1 combo solves this issue entirely. The user would have to get pellets for the material they want to recycle, as just the filament waste alone is not recommended for recycling because of the diminished quality post original printing.

Creality Filament Maker M1 and Shredder R1 Indiegogo campaign
The M1 and R1 are currently on Indiegogo and have achieved their goal of HK$783,000 (around $99,944 USD). The combo is currently sitting at HK$46,304,765 (around $5,910,479 USD) with 4,619 backers and 20 days left. Those who back the project now will get a 29% discount from its final pricing. The combo can be had for $1,199 as part of the super early bird offer, which includes 2kg of PLA pellets and an empty spool.
