LightMake L4 aims to revolutionize 3D printing with 4 simultaneously printing toolheads

3D printing is evolving at a rapid pace, and multi-toolhead printers are picking up steam. While most multi-toolhead options still only use one toolhead for actual printing, LightMake wants to do things differently with the L4. This 3D printer can print using four toolheads simultaneously. But that new technology comes at a premium.

The LightMake L4 has four independent toolheads that can either print independently on a large 354x370mm build plate or work together on a single print. LightMake is claiming one-second toolhead change with around one micrometer accuracy. That’s made possible by switching to linear motors rather than a belt-driven gantry. This allows the toolhead to move with zero transmission loss, though the max print speeds are comparable to most other modern printers on the market.

It also cites zero purge waste, but it’s actually very low purge waste. The comparison shows the L4 wasting under one gram of filament compared to over 219 grams by what is likely a single toolhead printer. Multi-material printing is also possible with the L4. As for the software, the slicer looks like a proprietary program that has unique AI features built in. Along with OpenClaw integration that allows generating models through WhatsApp messages, it can also do conversational slicing.

Videos of the LightMake L4 in action have been circulating on social media for a short while, but the company is now almost ready to launch a Kickstarter campaign. The L4 will be available via the crowdfunding platform from August 25, and there is a limited-time VIP offer that significantly drops its price. You can reserve one today with a $50 deposit, but as mentioned earlier, it is an expensive offering priced at $2,399. The limited-time VIP offer brings it down to $1,099 and also includes 4 kg of PLA filament.

The L4 is joined by the cheaper L1, which is a more traditional single toolhead 3D printer. It is priced at $1,599, with the VIP offer taking the price down to $899.
