Sovol M1D: New 3D printer combines IDEX and fast tool swaps

The Sovol M1D is now available for pre-order via a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Early bird pledges start at $1,299 plus shipping for the Essential Edition, with deliveries scheduled to begin in November. As with any crowdfunding campaign, financial risk remains a consideration. That said, Sovol is a relatively established brand in the 3D printing space, and early review units units confirm that functional hardware already exists.

Unlike the Bambu Lab X2D—which relies on two nozzles inside a single print head—the Sovol M1D features two separate toolheads, one of which can be quickly swapped out. This system allows users to cycle between up to six interchangeable, pre-loaded toolheads. Sovol claims swaps take just five seconds, significantly reducing the need for filament flushing, though nozzle pre-conditioning may still be required. Furthermore, while the Bambu Lab X2D only operates one print head at a time, the Sovol M1D can utilize both heads simultaneously depending on the selected mode, enabling dual-model printing to nearly double output.

The printer also includes automatic alignment detection between toolheads. Bed leveling is handled inductively—and thus contactlessly—rather than via force sensors, which Sovol notes speeds up the calibration process. Usable build volume varies by operating mode, maxing out at 300 × 300 × 350 mm. An enclosed build chamber with active heating is available on the higher-tier M1D Advanced, which currently starts at $1,599.
