Valve's latest launch saw scalpers rushing to buy and relist the in-demand Steam controller on eBay at inflated prices.
Valve's Steam Controller sold out in 35 minutes, crashing servers and feeding a scalper frenzy with eBay listings hitting $300. Valve has since acknowledged the shortage on X, and also promised a restock update soon.

Valve has officially acknowledged the disastrous launch of its new Steam Controller. The company posted on X that the device "ran out faster than we anticipated," and promised a restock update soon.

The $99 controller dropped on May 4, 2026, and almost immediately, buyers saw chaos. Valve's servers buckled the moment orders went live - buyers were reporting an "error initializing or updating your transaction" message as they scrambled to check out. In North America, stock was gone within 35 minutes.

As if the server meltdown wasn't enough, scalpers piled on quickly soon after. Confirmed eBay resales quickly showed up at $200-$300, more than triple the retail price in some cases, with buyers actually biting on those inflated listings.

The community's frustration is clearly more serious than simple rants about sold-out stock. Many are pointing to Valve's own Steam Deck (curr. $840 for a renewed unit on Amazon) launch as a blueprint it failed to follow - that rollout used a $5 deposit queue system that let users secure their place in line, which made the whole process relatively fair and bot-resistant. No such system existed in Steam controller's case, so everyday buyers were competing directly against scalper bots in a 30-minute window.

Valve's tweet, which racked up 27K likes and 466K views as of writing, at least shows that the company is aware of the mess. However, these supply issues are coming at an important time for Valve hardware, as other projects like the Steam Machine have been affected due to RAM and component shortages. For now, the "Out of Stock" button is the only thing that most potential buyers can see.
