Ex-Rockstar dev says GTA 6 release date delay of 6+ months possible despite pre-orders

Expectations are high for Rockstar Games to resume its marketing campaign and premiere a new trailer. Still, a former animator at the studio cautions that a GTA 6 release date delay is possible. Even as pre-orders continue, he claims that a “few bugs” could lead to a postponement.
York worked at Rockstar from 2012 to 2019, producing animations for games including GTA 5. He made the comments to Indy100 via the covers.com sports betting site. Although the creator has since left the company, York believes that its high standards haven’t changed.
Using a final mission as an example, if the developers feel it needs more polish, that may be enough to prompt a GTA 6 release date delay. According to York, “they'll push it six more months if they have to.” He also suggests that an unwelcome announcement wouldn’t hurt pre-order sales: “They can do whatever they want and people will wait right now, it doesn't matter.”
No reason for panic?
Despite this potential scenario, there is confidence that the game will arrive on time. The pause in marketing hasn’t rattled bettors on prediction markets like Polymarket. In mid-July, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also told investors that a November 19th debut is still “planned”.
Rockstar could provide a long-awaited update ahead of the publisher’s August 7th earnings call. GTA 6 trailers have surfaced shortly before or after these events. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson is closely watching August 6th for a new video. On the other hand, buyers learned of the second delay in November 2025 almost immediately before shareholders gathered.
Investors are confident, but many fans have run out of patience. Regardless, the studio has proven it will not ship projects unless it meets all its objectives. In the past, employees have accused management of implementing mandatory overtime in this pursuit. Zelnick denied that “crunch time” was still a factor, which may contribute to a longer development cycle.
