State of Play shows GTA 6 release date impact, with games stacking September

September was already shaping up to be a crowded month for new arrivals. However, the PlayStation State of Play added a barrage of additional AAA games shipping days or weeks apart. With an unusually packed calendar, publishers seem to be dreading the November 19th GTA 6 release date.
A September to remember
Viewers watched as one studio after another confirmed September or early October launches. Konami’s Scottish-set Silent Hill: Townfall will emerge from the shadows on September 24th. Shifting to a first-person perspective, the survival horror title hopes to match the success of Resident Evil: Requiem.
The broadcast verified several leaks ahead of the State of Play. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will revive the beloved Capcom franchise on September 25th. Ubisoft’s classic platformer, Rayman Legends Retold, returns soon after, on October 1st. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will also elude the GTA 6 release date with an October 2nd take-off.
Gamers also have to decide how to spend their money on titles with previously announced dates. Marvel’s Wolverine headlined the PlayStation event, and pre-orders are now live before its September 15th launch. Although some weren’t featured in the show, Blood of Dawnwalker, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV, and Hell is Us are all coming in September.
GTA 6 is expected to dominate the holidays, with one analyst predicting 40 million sales in its initial few months. As a result, publishers have admitted to shifting their schedules to avoid the phenomenon. Most recently, many observers believe the Fable delay to February was partly due to the crime epic.
The brave few
Not all companies are afraid to take on Rockstar. Also attending the State of Play, Remedy Entertainment is confident enough in the appeal of Control Resonant. The studio anticipates the hype attracting buyers seeking a variety of new experiences. Nevertheless, its September 24th date provides a bit of breathing room.
Likely not by choice, S-Game just confirmed a delay for Phantom Blade Zero to October 29th. Regardless, it’s debatable whether in a challenging economy, bunching so many releases together was wise. Still, publishers determined to introduce games this year have few options to sidestep the GTA 6 release date. The title could dominate the market well into 2027.
