Free upgrade for GTA 5 announced as GTA 6 marketing kicks off

GTA 6 marketing may have begun, at least that’s what Take-Two CEO’s street interview suggests. But while we wait for the biggest game ever, the longest-running game just got a free upgrade. Rockstar made the announcement on its news page, along with revealing a new heist coming to GTA Online.
GTA 5 launched in September of 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It then launched for the PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014, followed by a PC launch in April 2015. All these releases brought with them minor upgrades, bringing the game up to par with the latest console generation. Then, in March 2022, the game was released for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, once again bringing a visual upgrade in line with the new generation.
All these were independent purchases, so those who had the game on the PS4 would have to buy the PS5 version to get the best experience. Now, Rockstar has announced that PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game can be upgraded to the PS5 or Xbox Series version for free. The announcement was made today, June 17, and says the free upgrade will be available starting tomorrow, June 18.
GTA V and GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S feature vast technical improvements, easy migration of your Story Mode and Online progress, and new features including Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades, Career Progress rewards, and much more.
Along with the free upgrade, a new heist called ‘The Kortz Center Heist’ is also coming to GTA Online in July.
