A former Rockstar Games artist is also troubled by the region-locked GTA 6. PlayStation account holders have fewer choices for pre-orders and redeeming codes inside physical copies. Mike York thinks government policies are at fault, but the studio could have opted for a PS5 disc.

Rockstar Games' confirmation of a GTA 6 PS5 region lock has bolstered the arguments of physical game advocates. A former animator for the studio sympathizes with critics and realizes the advantages of discs. Yet Mike York places the blame elsewhere for the restrictions and doesn’t anticipate any impact on sales.

The blame game

Spotted by TheGamer, York spoke with Covers.com about the recent unwelcome announcement. The developer worked for Rockstar until 2017 on projects including GTA 5. He used strong words to describe the limitations, calling it a “garbage policy.” However, the creator believes governments seeking to block the game are the culprits.

In reality, Rockstar and Sony may share responsibility. Unlike on Xbox, the GTA 6 PS5 code-in-box is only redeemable if it matches the region of a buyer’s PlayStation account. That prevents gamers from importing boxed copies for lower prices. In addition, it’s an inconvenience for console owners who frequently travel. Fans also discovered that, in Japan, the code may expire in 170 days.

Microsoft’s rules for digital purchases are somewhat more lenient. To make matters worse, PlayStation doesn’t allow for simple region switching, which is possible on Xbox and Nintendo systems. Affected gamers often create secondary accounts. Still, doing so technically violates Sony’s TOS if they provide inaccurate information.

Physical gaming freedom

Rockstar would also have avoided controversy by shipping GTA 6 on a physical PS5 disc. While many of these titles now depend on downloads, they are more convenient for buyers when moving between countries. Another advantage is the ability to trade or resell the media later.

The studio may have other motivations for disappointing collectors. It’s notoriously paranoid about leaks that could disrupt marketing plans. The disc-less approach gives it more control over who, if anyone, can access the game before its release date.

York echoes the concerns over region locks and the demise of physical games. Regardless, according to the artist, it’s unlikely to curtail GTA 6 pre-order sales. He expects that fans will accept compromises and find workarounds to experience the crime epic.
