Gameplay focuses on carefully controlling small squads and vehicles. Making good use of cover, suppressive fire, flanking maneuvers and timely retreats is often more important than simply fielding larger numbers of units. The game also features classic base building alongside a resource system based on capturing and holding strategic points. Its destructible battlefields remain impressive even by today's standards. Artillery leaves craters, buildings collapse and destroyed bridges reshape entire attack routes. As a result, previously secure positions can disappear while new defensive opportunities emerge elsewhere on the battlefield.

Company of Heroes continues to enjoy an excellent reputation among strategy fans. Steam users frequently praise its deep tactical gameplay, dynamic battlefields and immersive atmosphere. On the downside, many players criticize the occasionally weak AI and pathfinding issues. Naturally, the game's once-groundbreaking visuals can no longer compete with modern AAA releases. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 93 and a User Score of 8.5. On Steam Deck, Steam currently rates the game as Playable.

Interest in the RTS classic is likely to grow again with the release of Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition, which is scheduled for fall 2026.
