Pokémon Red and Blue run natively on Windows and Android in new 3D voxel version

While Nintendo is having moderate success bringing Pokémon into the 3D era with games like Pokémon Legends: Z-A ($59 on Amazon), modders are showing what the first two Pokémon games would look like with 3D pixel graphics. This VoxelMod version allows players to adjust the angle at which Pokémon is played, ranging from the classic top-down perspective to a third-person view.
The 2D pixel graphics are transformed into 3D geometry, making the entire game world look like a giant diorama. Battles against trainers or wild Pokémon no longer take place on a white background, but on a battlefield taken directly from the game world, allowing for significantly more immersive battles.
The developer emphasizes that this version only changes the game’s appearance, not the gameplay or the structure of the game world, so Pokémon Red and Blue Edition with the VoxelMod plays exactly as it did on the Game Boy. The only difference is that this version is based on Gen1Recomp, a version of the classic Pokémon games featuring a completely new engine, which allows the games to run natively at 60 frames per second and with support for widescreen monitors on modern platforms such as Windows and Android.
The video embedded below shows Pokémon in action with VoxelMod. If you’d like to try the game for yourself, you can find both Gen1Recomp and the DramaticShape VoxelMod for free on GitHub, including installation instructions. To play, you’ll also need a ROM file for Pokémon Red or Blue.
