Turns out a shapeshifting Ditto rebuilding a farm is exactly what Switch 2 owners wanted. It also became Koei Tecmo's best-selling game ever in the process.

Pokémon Pokopia has crossed 5 million units sold worldwide across physical and digital versions, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company confirmed this week, a milestone reached just over four months after the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive launched on March 5.

The 5 million milestone is particularly notable because Pokopia reached it in just over four months. Nintendo previously reported that the game sold 2.2 million units during its first four days, meaning the title has more than doubled that launch figure as it has continued to attract players.

One of the biggest Nintendo Switch 2 releases to date

It's also become one of Switch 2's biggest hits outright. With roughly 24 million Switch 2 consoles sold worldwide, Pokopia's numbers put it at around a 20% attach rate, and CNBC reports the game now sits as the console's second-best-selling title, trailing Mario Kart World and ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza.

Within the wider Pokémon spinoff pantheon, Pokopia is closing in on some long-standing records. Nintendo 64 Pokémon Stadium has sold 5.4 million copies over its lifetime, while the combined sales of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue sit at roughly 5.8 million, meaning Pokopia could realistically claim the title of best-selling Pokémon spinoff of all time before its Expansion Pass wraps up.

News of the milestone landed alongside a content update adding a new Dive skill and the release of Bubbly Basin, the first paid chapter of the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass, which adds an underwater town along with new furniture, food, and Pokémon to meet. Two more Expansion Pass installments are planned, one later this year and another in 2027.

Nintendo's Tokyo-listed shares also closed 7% higher the day after the announcement, a welcome bump for a stock that's been under pressure from rising component costs that recently forced Nintendo to raise Switch 2 prices. The news makes one thing clear: Pokopia seems to have captured the hearts of Switch gamers everywhere. GameRant called the game "As good as the best life-sims, and a must-buy for Switch 2 owners" in a 9/10 review. Fans over on Nintendo Life, another player put it even more bluntly: "The power of cozy. Keep it coming."
