Pokémon GO celebrates 10 years with a massive Times Square live raid and a completely free GO Fest 2026 Global tier featuring Mega Mewtwo Y and Zeraora.

In 2015, the debut trailer for Pokémon GO showed massive crowds packed into Times Square, staring up at giant screens to battle a mythical Mewtwo in the middle of New York City. Scopely finally turned that eleven-year-old fictional concept into reality on Thursday, July 9, 2026, transforming the actual Manhattan hub into an immersive live raid zone to kick off the game's official tenth anniversary celebrations.

More than 1,000 players gathered in the plaza to take down Mega Mewtwo Y on massive interactive display boards before a surprise performance by electronic music duo Loud Luxury wrapped up the evening stunt.

Free global GO Fest 2026 removes paywall

The physical gathering served as the opening act for a major weekend rollout, leading directly into Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global. Unlike previous iterations of the annual festival, Scopely shifted the weekend event to a completely free tier for all trainers logged in during the celebration. The decision completely removes the standard premium-ticket paywall to maximize player participation for the tenth-anniversary milestone. This year's celebration features the global debut of Super Mega Raid Battles, giving players their first opportunity to capture Mega Mewtwo variants, alongside a new Special Research story focused on the mythical Pokémon Zeraora.

Ten years of player metrics show massive global footprint

The milestone arrives with a fresh set of lifetime metrics that highlight the game's unique staying power in a notoriously volatile mobile market. Since its explosive summer launch back in July 2016, the location-based app has drawn more than 800 million unique players into the real world. According to updated corporate figures shared by the publisher, that collective user base has caught over one trillion Pokémon across more than 150 countries.

Sustained commercial power and daily active user engagement

The initial 2016 craze that saw crowds chasing virtual monsters through public parks has naturally leveled off over the years, but the game's commercial power has not faded. The title remains a hit, clearing more than $1 billion in 2025 alone, keeping its unbroken streak as a top-ten mobile earner every year since day one.

Active trainers still average roughly 45 minutes of playtime a day. A decade later, the gamble on blending real-world walking with a major gaming franchise continues to sustain a massive, highly active global community.

In mobile gaming-related news, over one million players signed up for CookieRun: Crumble in just three days, but storefront registration remains open ahead of the expected late July launch.
