Onimusha: Way of the Sword gets an earlier September release date

Capcom is moving the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword forward. Instead of its original late September launch window, the game is now arriving three weeks early on September 4, 2026. This updated release date applies to all announced platforms, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Classical mechanics return to early Edo Kyoto
The adventure takes place in early Edo-period Kyoto, putting players in the shoes of a samurai protagonist named Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi must defend the land against waves of demonic Genma creatures by utilizing the powers of a mystical Oni Gauntlet. Game director Satoru Nihei confirmed that the project intentionally avoids modern open-world formats and popular Souls-like trends.
Instead, the development team is focusing entirely on a traditional gaming structure built around linear level progression and tight, responsive melee combat. Longtime fans of the franchise can look forward to the return of the classic Issen system. High-risk combat requires precise timing to execute lethal counterattacks against incoming enemy strikes.
Playable demo and early purchase bonuses
To give players an early taste of the swordplay, Capcom has already deployed a playable demo across PC and home consoles. Users who complete this preview and keep their save files on their hardware will unlock an exclusive digital item called the Kubi Akari charm in the final retail version. Due to the updated timeline, Capcom rebranded the standard pre-order incentives into an Early Adopter Bonus, which remains available for digital buyers until late September. However, the sudden shift in the calendar introduces a small administrative obstacle for Nintendo fans. Digital pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 edition on the Nintendo eShop are being automatically cancelled due to the revised timeline, requiring users to re-submit their purchases.
Physical pre-orders for the Nintendo platform are completely unaffected by this change. Furthermore, existing digital pre-orders on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC will transfer to the new release date automatically without requiring any action from players.
