Digimon Story: Time Stranger lands on Switch with massive day-one update

Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer Media.Vision have officially expanded the reach of their monster-taming JRPG, launching Digimon Story: Time Stranger on both the standard Nintendo Switch and the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2. The release ends a nine-month platform exclusivity window, bringing the seventh mainline entry to hybrid hardware following its initial debut on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S last October.
Nintendo Switch 2 adds graphics modes
The hybrid console rollout coincides with a broader graphics update across the game's more powerful platforms. The same Version 1.2.1 patch that brings Digimon Story: Time Stranger to Switch and Switch 2 also adds a Graphics Mode toggle to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions; however, it remains unavailable on the base Switch, Xbox Series S, and Steam, the last of which has instead let players customize graphics settings manually since launch.
On Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X, players can toggle between Quality Mode, which outputs at up to 4K resolution with HDR support at up to 30 frames per second, and Performance Mode, which runs at up to 1080p at up to 60 frames per second. The base Switch version runs a fixed 1080p docked and 720p handheld at 30 frames per second, with no mode selection.
Version 1.2.1 fixes two progression bugs
Coinciding with the Switch launch, a Version 1.2.1 title patch rolled out globally across all active storefronts to bring the game to feature and code parity. Beyond additions like a field exploration Photo Mode, a new playable Terriermon Assistant character, and a screen to check Digivolution Conditions directly inside the Digifarm, the patch addresses two specific bugs.
The first fix resolves an issue where training in the Digifarm would not complete once a save file's total playtime reached the maximum limit of 999 hours and 59 minutes, causing the remaining time countdown to stop progressing. The second fixes an issue that could prevent progression under certain conditions during the main story mission "The God of Speed's Wish." Bandai Namco's patch notes don't specify how long either issue had been present or how many players were affected.
A mature narrative shift for the classic JRPG franchise
The core campaign shifts the long-running Digimon Story subseries toward a darker narrative tone. The plot follows an agent of the fictional ADAMAS organization who is displaced eight years into the past following a catastrophic event in Tokyo known as the Shinjuku Inferno. Within the Digital World of Iliad, players navigate a faction conflict tied to the collapse of both worlds.
The turn-based combat system is built around a 3v3 active battle grid, with a party of up to six Digimon total and a three-slot reserve bench that can be swapped in without costing a turn. The game features more than 450 Digimon to scan, cultivate, and deploy. Bandai Namco has confirmed that the Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Digital Ultimate editions are live on the Nintendo eShop. On the Switch editions, the three DLC packs that make up the Season Pass are scheduled to release weekly on July 16, July 23, and July 30, 2026.
In mobile gaming news, over one million players signed up for CookieRun: Crumble in just three days;however, storefront registration remains open ahead of the expected late July launch.
