Disgaea Mayhem demo hits consoles and PC ahead of July 23 release

Nippon Ichi Software and NIS America are taking their flagship franchise in a distinct new direction with Disgaea Mayhem, launching globally on July 23, 2026. Arriving on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, the spin-off departs from the series' 23-year history of grid-based, turn-based strategy to deliver a fast-paced action RPG focused on high-speed, real-time combat.

A contract for a stolen dessert

The narrative follows N.A., a veteran mercenary whose motivations revolve around earning a paycheck and satisfying a heavy sweet tooth. Overlord Tichelle summons him in the Superlative Netherworld after an unexpected crisis strikes the realm. A thief has stolen the First Radiance Pudding, an irreplaceable dessert created by Tichelle’s deceased father. To recover the sentimental delicacy and punish the culprit, Tichelle hires N.A. to track down the thief across dangerous Netherworld locations.

Real-time action with classic franchise mechanics

Combat trades turn-based menus for direct button inputs, taking clear inspiration from Musou-style hack-and-slash games. Players can wield weapons across seven distinct classes, including swords, fists, axes, spears, handguns, and bows. Swapping weapon types gives direct options for clearing large groups or focusing down tough single targets.

The shift to real-time combat doesn't gut the series' RPG mechanics, though. Level caps remain set at 9,999, and stacked character stats still scale high enough to land single hits for a million damage. Long-term character growth relies on unit reincarnation to optimize base attributes, alongside deep equipment upgrading inside the Item World. 

Returning features include recruiting Netherworld demons such as Prinnies, transforming party members into active weaponry using the Magichange system, and submitting bills at the "Dark Chocolate Assembly" to modify gameplay rules.

A free playable demo featuring three stages and all seven weapon classes is currently available to download across Steam, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo eShop for both Switch and Switch 2, offering a hands-on preview of the game ahead of launch.
