Square Enix confirms Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will end service on October 6, 2026. Producer Shoichi Ichikawa explains the shutdown, plus the final Before Crisis content roadmap and refund details.

Square Enix is dropping yet another high-profile mobile venture. In an official announcement, the publisher confirmed that its gacha-fueled RPG Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will permanently end service on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT. The decision brings the curtain down on the title just a month after its upcoming third anniversary, continuing Square Enix's notoriously ruthless track record with mobile spin-offs.

The financial tightrope of high-quality gacha

While many end-of-service announcements hide behind vague corporate platitudes about "unfavorable market conditions," Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis producer Shoichi Ichikawa provided a remarkably candid explanation in a final letter to the community.

According to Ichikawa, the game simply became too expensive to maintain to the visual standard fans expected from a Final Fantasy VII property. The team struggled to strike a sustainable balance between rising production costs, specifically the demands of rendering high-fidelity character weapons and gear, and maintaining fair gameplay balance across the game's roster. In short, the high visual bar that made the game stand out also made it a financial tightrope the studio could no longer walk.

Finishing the story: The final roadmap

The silver lining for fans invested in the narrative is that Square Enix does not plan to leave the story unfinished. To wrap everything up before the servers go dark, the dev team has laid out a final content roadmap for the next three months.

Throughout July and August 2026, the game will finally roll out its long-awaited adaptation of the mobile-exclusive Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII-, split across three episodic parts.

September 6, 2026: To coincide with the game's third anniversary, the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII saga will release, complete with final weapon upgrades and seasonal quests.

Final Content Wave: Leading up to the October shutdown, past event campaigns, Guild Battles, and a "Festival of Gratitude" will return to let players experience everything they might have missed.

End of service and refunds

With the end of service on the way, Square Enix has already begun winding down the game's infrastructure. New downloads for the Steam PC port were immediately discontinued on July 7, 2026, though existing players can still log in until the final October deadline.

Furthermore, the publisher has confirmed that refunds for unused, paid-in-game currency (Red Crystals) will be offered, but only to players residing in Taiwan. The broader global player base is left with no option but to burn through their remaining balances before the servers go dark for good.
