Deal | Foxes vs. monsters: Unusual city builder drops below $5 on Steam

In Exodus Borealis, players lead a small group of shipwrecked fox-like creatures that must build a new home on a remote island. As the settlement gradually expands, a mysterious portal repeatedly opens, unleashing waves of monsters determined to wipe out the colony. The city builder from Smug Marmot Studios normally costs $19.99 on Steam, but a 75% discount reduces the price to $4.99 until July 20. According to SteamDB, this matches the game's all-time low, which was last reached at the end of June.
In terms of gameplay, Exodus Borealis offers a successful blend of city building and tower defense. Players construct production buildings, assign jobs, research new technologies and, at the same time, build defensive structures to fend off increasingly powerful waves of monsters. Resources are needed both to expand the settlement and to strengthen its defenses, forcing players to constantly balance economic growth against military security. An additional layer of tactical depth comes from a gem system that allows towers to be enhanced and customized with different elemental effects.

The Steam community has responded positively to Exodus Borealis, with 86% of more than 300 user reviews recommending the game. In its review, Softpedia praised the successful combination of city building and tower defense, the engaging resource management and the tactical gem system. The rather functional story, increasingly predictable gameplay loop and persistent labor shortages received a less favorable reception. The latter, in particular, puts additional pressure on players during the early stages of the game. Even so, the game still earned a solid 8 out of 10. Exodus Borealis is also rated as Playable on Steam Deck (currently available on Amazon for $720).
