“Hurts my soul”: Image of gaming shelf fuels fears of a bleak future

Today, anyone walking through the gaming section of an electronics retailer will typically find shelves lined with physical games for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch (currently available on Amazon for $380). In the future, however, those shelves could look very different – at least if a photo currently making the rounds on Reddit is any indication. The image, posted in the PlayStation 6 subreddit, shows a retail display where traditional game cases have been replaced by cards featuring the cover art of various titles. Instead of purchasing a game on disc, customers receive nothing more than a digital download code.

The person who shared the image described it as "A look at the future of gaming sections...." For many fans, that future looks deeply depressing. One user wrote that the image "hurts my eyes," while another commented, somewhat more dramatically, "hurts my soul." Even humorous remarks such as "Dark Souls: Online Code Edition" reflect the community's lack of enthusiasm. The photo is believed to have been taken at a Target store in the United States, although this has not been independently verified. It is also worth noting that this is almost certainly not an early consequence of Sony's announced move away from physical games, as Target has been selling download code cards long before Sony's controversial announcement.
Could gaming departments disappear altogether?
The image has prompted many users to wonder whether gaming departments will continue to exist at all in the future – or whether they will eventually be reduced to selling hardware alone. The reasoning is straightforward: download code cards offer little added value in a physical retail store. If customers are only purchasing a digital code, they can simply buy it online and avoid making a trip to the store. That would leave impulse buyers and people shopping for gifts as the primary audience. Whether that would be enough to justify large gaming sections in electronics retailers remains an open question.
One potential beneficiary of this shift could be Nintendo. Some Reddit users speculate that by continuing to support physical games, the company could eventually occupy a larger share of the remaining retail shelf space. For now, however, these remain nothing more than fan theories. How the future of physical games will ultimately unfold – and whether the community's ongoing protests will have any impact – remains to be seen.
