Microsoft restores player's 25-year-old account following widespread backlash

A Microsoft user has regained access to a 25-year-old account following a hacking incident and permanent suspension, which ignited widespread criticism online. Streamer Joshua Khane said the compromised account contained decades of digital game purchases and important files, including baby photos of his son. Microsoft initially confirmed the account had been compromised, but permanently suspended it instead of restoring access, leaving him convinced everything had been lost.

Khane shared his experience on social media, where the story quickly gained attention. His complaint fueled renewed debate over digital ownership, cloud storage and the risks of relying entirely on online accounts for purchased content and personal files. Many users argued that the incident highlighted the need for stronger customer support, while others stressed the importance of maintaining multiple backups and enabling additional security features such as multi-factor authentication.

Following the public backlash, Xbox reached out to Khane and successfully restored access to his account, to his games and files. Although relieved by the outcome, Khane questioned why Microsoft only acted after his complaint had become viral, suggesting that regular users may not have the same result in the absence of widespread public attention and criticism.
