“Vote with your wallets”: PlayStation fans protest against the end of physical games

Opposition to Sony's decision to stop releasing new PlayStation games on disc from 2028 onward continues to grow. Since the beginning of the month, the PlayStation 6 subreddit has been flooded with posts from users showing screenshots of their canceled PlayStation Plus subscriptions. Many fans say they have no intention of buying the PS5's successor if it no longer supports physical games.
The goal of the coordinated cancellations is to pressure Sony into reconsidering its plans. Even if the PS6 has already been designed without a built-in disc drive, supporters of the campaign argue that Sony could still offer disc support for PS4 and PS5 games through an optional external drive.
In a recent Reddit post, one user encouraged others to continue canceling their subscriptions and to share their cancellations publicly. According to u/light_breezy, players should "vote with their wallets" and not be discouraged by claims that Sony will simply ignore the protest. Financial pressure, they argue, is the only thing that might persuade the company to change course.
Many commenters agree. Reddit user u/Redhead_893_ says this is the first time in 15 years they have not had an active PS Plus subscription. Meanwhile, u/Leading_Cookie_2885 says they no longer plan to subscribe to PS Plus or buy games from the PlayStation Store, choosing instead to purchase only physical copies.
Many believe the cancellations will have little impact
Opinions within the community are far from unanimous. Many users doubt the cancellations will have any meaningful effect, especially since there is no way to verify how many subscriptions Sony has actually lost. Some Reddit users also believe that many of those canceling now will return as soon as the next major sale begins.
Others argue that Sony's reasoning is understandable and see the move away from physical games as a direct consequence of consumer behavior. In their view, players have already "voted with their wallets" in favor of digital purchases. Some commenters therefore intend to keep their PS Plus subscriptions and would still buy a disc-less PS6. Whether the current protest campaign will have any real impact remains to be seen. According to one industry expert, however, it is unlikely.
