Xbox disc-to-digital news likely before July 31, capitalizing on PS5 physical game outrage

Windows Central’s Jez Corden had anticipated that Microsoft would reveal its disc-to-digital program. The rumored Positron hasn’t debuted yet, but the insider is confident the news is imminent. On a new podcast, he explained that by July 31st, Xbox console owners should learn how they can preserve physical games.

Corden updated fans on the latest XB2 broadcast. After admitting that his previous estimate was off, he reached out to sources during the show. The leaker learned that Microsoft is deciding how it’s “going to talk about it from a PR perspective”, but expects details to surface by the “end of the month.”

An unusually vulnerable PlayStation

Sony’s announcement that it would print fewer PS5 discs in 2028 has been widely condemned. PlayStation can’t make a social media post without hearing criticism about its embrace of digital games. With reports that developers are also growing upset, its rival may have an opportunity to strike.

A Windows Central article in May 2026 first discussed the disc-to-digital initiative. In early July, The Verge claimed that insiders had begun testing the feature on the Series X and S. It’s possible that more gamers will be able to experiment with Positron soon.

It’s believed that discs inserted into Xbox consoles would generate a license . Owners could still sell or trade the media since the license is tied to a single Microsoft account at a time. The formerly physical game also becomes downloadable or accessible on multiple machines.

Positron limitations
