Microsoft may allow the conversion of Xbox game discs to digital licenses. The rumored Disc2Digital program could debut by the Project Helix release date. While the new Xbox console and PS6 likely won’t ship with optical drives, Helix would boast more versatile backward compatibility.

Sony’s decision to stop producing discs in early 2028 points to an exclusively digital PS6. A report hints that the new Xbox console will only boot digital games as well. However, Microsoft may offer a way to enhance backward compatibility by the Project Helix release date. A disc-to-digital program could give the system an advantage over its rival.

How would Disc2Digital work?

According to Tom Warren of The Verge, a feature called “Disc2Digital” surfaced in code for the Xbox PC app in May. When media is inserted into a console, it converts physical Xbox games into digital licenses. Tied to accounts, selling the same disc will transfer that license to another gamer.

Unfortunately, there would be limitations with the rumored program. Only Xbox One and Series X/S media would qualify, excluding older generations like the OG Xbox and Xbox 360. The fate of delisted games that aren’t part of Microsoft’s backward compatibility initiative, or available digitally, is also unclear.

Currently in testing, Disc2Digital may be ready by the Project Helix release date in 2027. Even so, reporting from Windows Central introduces another potential complication. In a similar scenario as the PS6, the site revealed, “Our sources also suggest that Microsoft's next-generation console will drop the disc drive, too.”

Converting discs for Project Helix

Lacking an optical drive, buyers of the new Xbox console would have no way to benefit from the perk. That said, many will own older systems that welcome physical media. As a hybrid sharing characteristics with a gaming PC, a USB accessory could provide the same convenience on the newer hardware. Security is a concern, but gamers could see kiosks at retailers that connect to accounts.

Even if it hasn’t helped their profits, Xbox consoles have generally been more friendly to aging releases. The Series X and prior machines accept some Xbox and Xbox 360 games on disc, which date back to 2001.

By contrast, the PS5 is backward compatible with PS4 titles, but the PS3’s unusual cell processor has left some classics behind. The PS6 is likely to support the last two generations, but rely heavily on cloud streaming to accommodate PS3 fans. Unless Sony finds a workaround to extend the lifespan of physical games, Disc2Digital could make PlayStation loyalists envious of Project Helix.
