Nintendo CEO confirms Nintendo Switch 2 will be backward compatible with the original Switch
Even though Nintendo announced it would reveal its next handheld console soon, we're yet to heard anything about it. However, a torrent of leaks have revealed pretty much everything there is to know about the Nintendo Switch 2. Now, the company has taken to X and confirmed an often-talked-about rumour. This comes directly from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be backward compatible with all Nintendo Switch titles, meaning full backward compatibility is confirmed across all platforms. Additionally, Nintendo Switch online will be available on the Switch 2, meaning you can directly access previous-gen titles on the console. The company will reveal more information about its upcoming handheld later.
Unfortunately, the brief post doesn't include a release date. In a recent earnings call (via Insider Gaming), it was confirmed the Nintendo Switch 2 was on track for a fiscal year 2024 (April 2025) launch. At this point, just about every leak predicting the Switch 2's launch date has proven to be inaccurate, so it's best to wait a few weeks for Nintendo's grand reveal.
