The putative Nintendo Switch successor has been one of the most widely talked about gaming console in recent history, with leaks about its innards dating back to early 2023. Previous leaks speculated it would launch sometime in March 2025, nearly ten years after the original was unveiled. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has now put all speculation to rest via an X post.
It states the Nintendo Switch 2 (tentative) will be announced "before the fiscal year", with no indication about when the console will actually go on sale. A mid-2025 sale date seems likely from a strictly financial point of view. The announcement also talks about a Nintendo Direct in June and explicitly states that the event will not talk about the Nintendo Switch 2 in any capacity.
In essence, it may be a few more months before we hear about the Nintendo Switch 2. The generation-over-generation performance gains might not be anything to write home about, but some interesting upgrades like magnetic Joy-cons, support for Nvidia DLSS and backward compatibility with existing Nintendo Switch (curr. $296 on Amazon) titles will be enough of an incentive to upgrade. Then again, Nintendo has an incredibly dedicated fanbase and the console will almost certainly fly off shelves the moment it is available.
