Nintendo won't launch its next console until March 2025, according to a new report by Nikkei Asia. This report corroborates earlier claims that the Nintendo Switch's successor wouldn't launch until sometime in Q1 2025.
According to Nikkei, Nintendo delayed its next console to March 2025 in order to ensure it would have ample supply to meet demand. The company also wanted to give more time to game developers to make games that would support the new console's launch. Per Nikkei, the Japanese gaming giant wants to avoid the supply issues and software desert it encountered with the Switch's launch back in 2017.
Not much is currently known about the next Nintendo console. Commonly called the Switch 2, the console is rumored to maintain the same handheld configuration as the current Switch but have a larger display. It is also rumored to use a similar docking solution for hooking it up to a larger display and will allegedly be backward-compatible with current Switch cartridges.
The Nintendo Switch recently capped 139 million units in total sales, cementing its position as the third best-selling video game console of all time, falling behind Nintendo's own DS and Sony's PlayStation 2. With the high demand for Nintendo's current console, it's not unreasonable to expect high demand for its hotly anticipated sequel.
While the Switch 2's delay has been met with negativity from the gaming community (and the broader market), as a quote often misattributed to Nintendo director Shigeru Miyamoto, "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."
