GPD Win Mini 2024 raises over $150k in new crowdfunding campaign
Earlier this week, GPD brought forth the Win 4 2024, the gaming handheld's second refresh since its original release in late 2022. Now, the company has offered up an upgraded Win Mini, which it calls the Win Mini 2024. While GPD only released the first Win Mini in autumn 2023, the Win Mini 2024 has already garnered over $150,000 in crowdfunding support on Indiegogo.
As we discussed last week, the Win Mini 2024 is more than just an AMD Ryzen 8040U refresh. Additionally, GPD has adopted a new native landscape display panel that should make it easier to play older DirectX 9 titles. Supposedly the panel from the ASUS ROG Ally, the display also supports AMD FreeSync Premium and a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for an improved experience in games that have fluctuating frame rates.
Moreover, GPD claims that the new model delivers 5-8% longer battery life, in part because it has removed the original model's DP to MIPI chip. Unfortunately, the Win Min 2024 lacks its predecessor's OCuLink port, unlike the Win 4 2024. As such, the Win Mini 2024 must make do with using a slower USB4 connection when paired with eGPUs like the GPD G1, which the company also recently refreshed.
The Win Mini 2024 is only available with an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U APU at the time of writing. However, there should be Ryzen 5 8640U SKUs at some point. Until that point, the Win Mini 4 2024 starts at $879 with 32 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage; currently, GPD is targeting April 2024 shipments for all Ryzen 7 8840U Indiegogo orders.
