GPD Win Mini 2024 announced with updated AMD Ryzen processors and ASUS ROG Ally display
GPD is continuing its AMD Hawk Point product stack refresh, having already brought the Ryzen 7 8840U to the Win Max 2 and Win 4. Now, the company has turned to the Win Mini, which it originally released in September 2023 with Ryzen 5 7640U and Ryzen 7 7840U APUs. While the Win Mini 2024 may seem like a simple processor upgrade on the surface, GPD has made a few other noteworthy changes too, albeit not necessarily for the better.
On the one hand, the Win Mini 2024 lacks its predecessor's OCuLink port that provides 63 Gbps bandwidth with an eGPU like the GPD G1. Consequently, the Win Mini 2024 makes do with USB4 for GPD G1 compatibility, which offers 36.5% lower peak bandwidth than OCuLink. On the other hand, the Win Mini 2024 should have a superior display, although its remains a 7-inch LTPS IPS display that outputs at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels with 500 nits brightness and a 120 Hz refresh rate.
However, the new display is a native landscape panel that supports AMD FreeSync Premium and a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). GPD adds that this panel is the same one that ASUS sources for the ROG Ally; please see our review of the latter for more display details. Incidentally, GPD claims that the removal of a DP to MIPI chip helps reduce power consumption, too.
Moreover, the adoption of Ryzen 8000 APUs is said to help the Win Mini 2024 achieve 60 FPS when emulating various PlayStation 3 titles, including God of War III and Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time. Currently, GPD has not set a date for when it will begin selling the Win Mini 2024. Nonetheless, the company hopes to start shipping the gaming handheld from April 2024 onwards and has set the following Indiegogo launch prices for Ryzen 7 8840U SKUs:
- Ryzen 7 8840U, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD - $879
- Ryzen 7 8840U, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, - $999
- Ryzen 7 8840U, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, GPD G1 eGPU - $1,534
- Ryzen 7 8840U, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, GPD G1 eGPU - $1,654
