Funnyplaying Game Boy Color clone brings FPGA cartridge gaming to retro gaming handheld scene for under $100
A few months ago, ETA Prime outlined an upcoming Funnyplaying gaming handheld built around a Gowin Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). As we discussed at the time, the YouTuber showcased an early unit and did not confirm launch pricing. However, Funnyplaying is now selling its FPGA Game Boy Color kit directly and through Retro Game Repair Shop.
Additionally, Macho Nacho Productions has tested a retail unit, embedded below, in which they describe the device as the 'FP-GBC'. Unfortunately, the complete device costs significantly more than $69, the price that ETA Prime reported in November. Instead, Funnyplaying's kit lacks the shell, buttons or membranes necessary to create an entire system.
At the time of writing, Funnyplaying sells seven shell options, all for $9.90, plus buttons and membranes for $1.90 each. Overall, a complete FP-GBC unit costs at least $83.60, making it 21% more expensive than Funnplaying previously implied. With all that in mind, the Funnyplaying FB-GBC remains significantly cheaper than the Analogue Pocket, which retails for $219.99 before shipping and taxes.
As such, the two devices cater to slightly different audiences. On the other hand, Funnyplaying's device is more affordable, smaller and a closer match to the original Game Boy Color form factor. On the other hand, the Analogue Pocket has a larger and more pixel-dense display with support for video-out to an external monitor. Moreover, the Analogue Pocket can play cartridges from more systems, and now offers openFPGA cores that support NES, SNES and SEGA Genesis titles, among others.
