CheckMag | 5 awesome DRM-free games to grab at a huge discount on GOG.com
A game purchased on GOG will stay with its owner forever with no DRM of any kind hogging CPU cycles, no need to always keep an annoying client on, no need to have an Internet connection and no need to upgrade the operating system (this is a reference to Steam forcing people to upgrade to Windows 10 now that support for Windows 7/8/8.1 has ended). Games that are actually good are routinely sold at a discount on GOG, too. Five such games are listed below.
Discounted game #1: Apotheon
- Current GOG price: $0.78 (valid till March 02, 03:00 AM EST)
- Initially released in: 2015
- System requirements: A dual-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a DX 9-enabled graphics adapter
- GOG "verified user" rating: 3.7 stars out of 5
This is a 2D game that looks like an artwork from ancient Egypt or ancient Greece. Like most games, Apotheon is all about killing the main character's enemies. The person playing Apotheon will have to defeat a lot of various enemies (mortals, mythical creatures and even gods) to fulfil a certain prophecy - and every second of this endeavour will look and sound amazing, making the game worth every cent spent on it.
Discounted game #2: Urban Trial Freestyle
- Current GOG price: $0.18 (valid till March 02, 03:00 AM EST)
- Initially released in: 2013
- System requirements: A dual-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, a DX 10-enabled graphics adapter
- GOG "verified user" rating: 4.3 stars out of 5
In Urban Trial Freestyle, you get a bike to do stunts on, dodging various obstacles such as boulders and explosions in the process. There are lots of tracks in the game and to conquer them all, plenty of patience (and plenty of bike upgrades) will be needed. This is not a unique game by any means, but it's still enjoyable and addictive.
Discounted game #3: GRIP
- Current GOG price: $0.85 (valid till March 02, 03:00 AM EST)
- Initially released in: 2018
- System requirements: A dual-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM, a DX 11-enabled graphics adapter
- GOG "verified user" rating: 3.9 stars out of 5
This racing game leverages Epic's UE 4 engine to deliver quality visuals without putting too much stress on the hardware. Tracks look breathtakingly good, and in-game music is good, too but more importantly the player has access to a healthy variety of weapons to blow up their opponents and make sure the fun is always in good supply. GRIP also features a split-screen multiplayer mode, making it possible for several people to play on a single laptop or PC.
Discounted game #4: Absolute Drift Zen Edition
- Current GOG price: $1.02 (valid till March 02, 03:00 AM EST)
- Initially released in: 2015
- System requirements: A dual-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, a DX 10-enabled graphics adapter
- GOG "verified user" rating: 2.9 stars out of 5
Absolute Drift delivers minimalistic, clean-looking visuals and several driving areas to choose from - as well as several vehicles, of course. Racing per se is not the main focus here; completing challenges presented by the game is. An energetic mix of drum-and-bass tunes serves as in-game music.
Discounted game #5: Steel Rats
- Current GOG price: $0.95 (valid till March 02, 03:00 AM EST)
- Initially released in: 2018
- System requirements: A dual-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM, a DX 11-enabled graphics adapter
- GOG "verified user" rating: 2.9 stars out of 5
Destroy evil robots, save the city. (And the world.) To do this, you get four characters riding bizarre motorcycles outfitted with flame throwers and other crazy weapons. As you progress from level to level, you get upgrades for the bikes as well as for the riders. According to several reviews, Steel Rats is not really a game that is worth going back to over and over again; either way, it's such a marvel to look at.
