PiBoy DMGx announced to transform Raspberry Pi 5 into retro gaming handheld
Experimental Pi has created a new gaming handheld kit, having introduced several options in the last few years like the PiBoy Mini for the Raspberry Pi Zero and Raspberry Pi Zero 2. Now, the company has turned to the Raspberry Pi 5, which the Raspberry Pi Foundation released over six months ago. As Liliputing notes, the PiBoy DMGx builds on the PiBoy DMG that Experimental Pi launched roughly four years ago.
While the PiBoy DMGx is not orderable yet, Experimental Pi has confirmed launch pricing and what the full kit includes. Specifically, the PiBoy DMGx will retail for $149.95, $10 more than the older PiBoy DMG. Moreover, the former will ship with the following components:
- 2 shoulder button styles
- 3.5-inch LCD (640 x 480 pixels)
- 4500mAh LiPo battery
- Analog stick
- Cooling fan
- D-pad
- Heatsink
- RPi connector face plates
- Select/start buttons
- Six action buttons
- Speaker
- USB Type-C charging port
Thus, you must supply a Raspberry Pi 5 and a MicroSD card, as well as any ROMs you want to play. Theoretically, the PiBoy DMGx should be powerful enough to emulate Dreamcast, N64 and PlayStation Portable titles, among other game libraries. Unfortunately, it is unclear when the PiBoy DMGx will be available, although full details can be found on the Experimental Pi website.
