Retro Game Pocket announced as FPGA retro gaming handheld for up to Game Boy Advance and SNES emulation
Sipeed is preparing to release a wave of gaming handhelds powered by Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). For context, Sipeed is best known for releasing single-board computers (SBCs) like the Longan Pi 3H. However, the company has unveiled other product types before, including the Lichee Pocket 4A gaming handheld.
Supposedly, Sipeed is working on two FPGA-based gaming handhelds, although it has only revealed the design and specifications of one device so far. For reference, the second unnamed gaming handheld is said to feature a 3.5~4.5-inch display and the hardware required to output to an external display. By contrast, the Retro Game Pocket sports a 2-inch LCD that outputs at 480 x 360 pixels in a landscape format.
Additionally, the Retro Game Pocket has a 1,500 mAh battery and a Mini HDMI port, all within a 100 x 50 x 15 mm housing. Moreover, the gaming handheld will rely upon the TangPrimer 25K core board that integrates a Gowin Arora 5 GW5A-LV25MG121 FPGA, as well as 64 MB of RAM. While not the most powerful of FPGAs, Sipeed asserts that it should handle up to Game Boy Advance and SNES titles. Unfortunately, other details remain unknown for now, including a release date.
