PiBoy Mini introduced as new gaming handheld based on Raspberry Pi with HDMI output
Experimental Pi has started selling the PiBoy Mini, a retro-inspired gaming handheld. According to the manufacturer, the PiBoy Mini relies on the Raspberry Pi Zero or Zero 2, which must be purchased separately. It is worth noting that the PiBoy Mini only comes partially assembled. However, it should be simple enough for beginners to assemble themselves with no soldering required.
The PiBoy Mini measures 112 x 88 x 20 mm, within which Experimental Pi has included a 3.5-inch IPS display that resolves at 640 x 480 pixels and 60 Hz. Theoretically, the PiBoy Mini will be capable of playing some games at 480p and 60 FPS, although it depends on which SBC powers the device and which title is being played or emulated. The PiBoy Mini also has a d-pad, four-game buttons, three action buttons and two shoulder buttons that sit between its microSD card cover and its 2,800 mAh LiPo battery.
For reference, the PiBoy Mini can be recharged via a USB Type-C port, which appears to communicate with a Pi Zero or Zero 2 via a daughterboard. Additionally, the PiBoy Mini can use either SBC’s HDMI port for gaming on an external monitor. ExperimentalPi has not stated whether it provides any software with which to play games, but the PiBoy Mini should safely shut down a connected Raspberry Pi. The company has also included calibration and test menus, should you need to use these. Currently, the PiBoy Mini is orderable on Experimental Pi for US$89.95. Pre-orders should start shipping on May 10 2023.
