Gaming handhelds equipped with AMOLED and OLED displays have become more popular of late, although Sony can claim to have mass produced the first example over a decade ago with the PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). While the PS Vita utilised a 5-inch and 544p OLED panel, Valve and AYANEO brought 800p and 1080p versions to market last year with the Steam Deck OLED, the Pocket Air and the AIR 1S.
Arguably, the best-selling OLED gaming handheld is the Switch OLED (curr. $349.99 on Amazon), which has now surpassed the 15-16 million estimated PS Vita units that Sony shipped. For some reason, Nintendo has elected against giving the Switch Lite an OLED refresh, despite the Switch Lite outselling the Switch OLED as of Nintendo's Q2 FY2024 results. Instead, YouTuber Taki Udon has revealed that an unknown third party is developing an aftermarket solution.
Currently referred to as an 'early prototype', it is unclear whether the example shown below is the same company that Udon claimed had previously cancelled its Switch Lite OLED project because of fears that 'the mod would be too difficult for people to do'. However, the YouTuber now implies that this new OLED modification would be easier to accomplish, adding that HDMI output at 720p 'is a potential feature' as well. Supposedly, the unnamed company is targetting a '$25-$50' price range too, although exact pricing 'would be based on interest'. Unfortunately, Udon has not shared an approximate release date or more panel details.
