On November 13, Blizzard is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Warcraft series - and has already announced that it has "epic surprises" in store. Now there is reason to believe that this could mean the announcement of a remastered version of Warcraft II. According to data miner Stiven, known for his reliable insights on Blizzard games, a new edition of the real-time strategy classic is reportedly in development. If this is indeed the case, it is reasonable to assume that Blizzard will announce the game in the upcoming anniversary stream.
Divided feelings in the community
A new edition of Warcraft II would not be the first remaster of the Warcraft series. Fans have not yet forgotten the debacle surrounding Warcraft III: Reforged, which was released in 2020. The supposedly polished version disappointed on several levels: Promised graphical improvements and new cutscenes were missing and important features such as clans and tournaments were not implemented. In addition, there were technical problems that made the game almost unplayable for many. The Metacritic ratings clearly reflect this (Metascore of 59/ User Score of 0.6).
Many fans are now afraid of Warcraft III: Reforged flashbacks. On Reddit, many players are calling for Blizzard to address the bugs in Warcraft III: Reforged before releasing any new remasters. However, there are also optimistic voices in the community. After all, Blizzard has seen success with StarCraft: Remastered and Diablo II: Resurrected, and fans are hopeful that the studio can build on these achievements with a Warcraft II remaster.
