Sony won’t cease producing discs for new PS5 games until January 2028. Even so, some partners may be ready to go all-digital by 2027. The Lords of the Fallen 2 publisher believes the allure of higher profits will convince companies to desert physical games now.

PlayStation plans to stop printing new PS5 discs in early 2028, but many publishers may act now. Marek Tyminski, CEO of CI Games, explains that earning higher revenue is a strong motivator. Consequently, the transition from physical games to digital could be completed ahead of schedule.

A grim future for game collectors

CI Games will still ship Lords of the Fallen 2 on discs in 2027. However, he thinks Sony’s announcement will compel companies to pivot quickly. GTA 6 embracing a code-in-box format is also a factor. On social media, Tyminski said, “Sony ending physical support from 2028 could slash disc releases as early as 2027 or even sooner.”

While Sony manufactures the Blu-ray media for PS5 games, publishers decide whether a title will be digital only. Particularly for smaller companies, it’s become difficult to meet profit goals due to rising production costs. Despite protests, many buyers also already rely exclusively on the PlayStation Store.

Tyminski highlighted how for a $69.99 game on disc, retailers see a 25-35% cut, with distributors taking another 10-20%. Once factoring in other expenses, a publisher would earn just $26. By contrast, a digital release could generate up to $49 in revenue.

Rise of digital is reshaping game sales

Given these economic realities, it makes sense not to wait until 2028 to move on from physical games. Yet, Tyminski realizes the impact of Sony’s move on retailers. He referenced GameStop, which, even with GTA 6 PS5 pre-orders available, is struggling to attract new customers. More stores may have to give up on game sales in favor of collectibles and alternative merchandise.

Meanwhile, fans still have hopes of PlayStation reversing its decision. Negative comments inundate the gaming giant’s social media accounts. Other critics claim to have canceled their PS Plus subscriptions.

Buyers worry that they never truly own digital games, citing Sony’s recent removal of 551 movies and TV shows from accounts. Regardless, prioritizing profits, publishers are more eager to leave physical PS5 games behind.
