The Crimson Desert PS5 physical media is not nearly large enough to contain Pywel. A gamer discovered that an over 48GB digital download will be necessary on its release date. Players can explore the sprawling open world offline after installing the additional files.

As with many open-world titles on the console, the Crimson Desert PS5 version has an immense file size. Does it play? on social media verified that the physical game ships with around 77GB on its disc. However, buyers will need to download another 48.24GB on its March 19th release date. Otherwise, playing offline will not be possible.

The Blu-ray format is aging quickly

PS5 media has a maximum capacity of 100GB, which poses problems for large-scale projects. At 147GB, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is another game that can strain internet connections after purchasing. Nevertheless, opponents of digital gaming often protest forced downloads.

Even Crimson Desert Deluxe Edition pre-orders, aimed at collectors, is not an exception. Some buyers had hoped that Pearl Abyss would follow the example of other titles with large file sizes, like Baldur’s Gate 3. The PS5 game is spread across multiple discs to accommodate gamers without broadband access.

Unfortunately, as games become more massive in scope, consoles are struggling to keep pace. Switch 2 owners are facing similar issues with Game-Key cards. The handheld’s 64GB cartridges aren’t sufficient for expansive worlds like those featured in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. With only minimal data on the Game-Key Card, players have to connect to servers hosting additional files.

The hidden costs of modern physical releases

As the memory shortage also inflates storage prices, adding capacity has become less affordable. Physical releases used to spare SSDs, but now more than small patches are often mandatory on day one.

The good news is that early Crimson Desert reviews suggest that the PS5 game is worth the hassle. Pearl Abyss advertised a nearly endless open-world adventure, and the studio has apparently delivered. One YouTuber explained that after 50 hours, he had only explored a fraction of Pywel. Graphics are cutting-edge, performance meets expectations, and hyper-realistic physics that make combat feel more authentic.

To clear up any confusion, following the initial release date download, gamers can play the Crimson Desert PS5 version offline. Pearl Abyss also previously clarified on its website that not all of the game would fit on the disc.
