GTA 6 release date will see physical version, despite rumor of delay to curtail leaks

Fans of physical media can breathe a sigh of relief after comments from Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. Speaking with Variety, he denied a rumor that only digital versions would be available on the GTA 6 release date. Providing an update after the latest quarterly earnings report, Rockstar Games plans to meet its November 19th, 2026, deadline.

When asked about a digital-only strategy, Strauss told Variety, “That’s not the plan.” Some gamers had worried that the publisher would delay the debut of boxed copies. Polish PPE.pl recently reported that physical versions may face a 3-4 week delay or more.

A postponement might ward off further GTA 6 leaks, which Rockstar has fought against. As seen particularly with Nintendo titles, at least one retailer inevitably ends up selling a new arrival early. The game is likely to notch record-breaking sales regardless, but the decision could have also prevented timely reviews.

Was Take-Two considering ditching a physical release?

Fans were skeptical of the PPE report, even though the source had previously made accurate predictions. Still, the industry has been moving toward an all-digital landscape. Buyers who were once reluctant are now accustomed to downloading purchases. Without the added production costs, Take-Two would also earn more profits.

Fortunately for traditionalists, they will still be able to show off a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S retail box on the GTA 6 release date. Leaks have not yet surfaced about potential collector’s editions with bonus items.

Zelnick provided IGN with more positive news. Addressing whether GTA 6 would appear on time, he said, "I feel good about it. Very good about it." However, he expressed similar feelings before the last delay was announced in November 2025. 

The company intends to unleash a marketing campaign this Summer. A new trailer or any sort of media might convince skeptics that Rockstar has made progress.
