Microsoft reportedly delays Fable, as GTA 6 release date threatens Xbox game

In February, The Verge reported that Microsoft may reconsider the launch timing of several Xbox games. Rockstar Games’ next project looms over the industry, with publishers anxious to avoid the GTA 6 release date. Now, according to insider Jeff Grubb, the open-world RPG Fable “has been pushed internally.”
Fable release date in danger
A new Fable game could be a much-needed financial boost to Microsoft’s gaming division. Its most recent fiscal report highlighted losses with both first-party titles and services like Game Pass. Unfortunately, fans may now have to wait longer to see if Playground Games can successfully revive the franchise.
The January Developer Direct revealed that the Xbox game would arrive in the fall. As veteran journalist Jeff Grubb explains, 2026 isn’t impossible. Shared by Idle Sloth, he explained in a video, “They’re still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of GTA 6.”
One scenario is that Microsoft picks December to capitalize on the holiday season. Even so, that’s not long after the November 19th GTA 6 release date. When GTA 5 surfaced in September 2013, it topped sales charts for several months. Analysts predict an even stronger performance for its follow-up. With so much focus on one title, it becomes difficult to compete for buyers’ attention.
The industry is watching Rockstar's every move
Rockstar Games will begin a marketing campaign for GTA 6 during the summer season. Followers still aren’t convinced that a third delay won't disappoint fans. Nevertheless, without an official announcement, publishers are running out of time to realign their calendars.
If Playground developers can’t complete Fable soon enough to ship in October, 2027 becomes a more realistic target. The question then becomes whether Xbox has enough first-party AAA games in the pipeline to satisfy investors.
Even without being able to explore Albion, Xbox supporters can look forward to Forza Horizon 6 on May 19th. During a June showcase, viewers will see more of Gears of War: E-Day, another 2026 release. In addition to the Diablo 4 expansion, Lord of Hatred, Halo: Campaign Evolved also lurks. Microsoft could decide it has enough in the works to justify a Fable delay.
