While it’s not surprising, Video Games Chronicle reports that the Fable reboot will come to the PS5. However, it’s also possible that the RPG could ship on the rival console on day one. Leaker NateTheHate2 believes that a past delay gave Playground Games the time to execute a cross-platform launch.
Xbox may soon finalize a Fable release date
Microsoft announced it was revisiting Fable in 2020, before narrowing down a 2025 debut four years later. In February 2025, fans found out that the project needed more work. Gamers anticipate that the Xbox Developer Direct on January 22nd will pinpoint a release date, ideally in 2026.
After the delay, NateTheHate2 offered a theory as to why Playground Games lengthened its development cycle. The leaker speculated on the ResetEra forums that “it's to allow some extra time for polish & to make the PS5 version a Day 1 release alongside Xbox/PC because the PS5 version was always slated for 2026.”
Following the VGC report and news that Fable will headline the upcoming Xbox event, he echoed his previous comments. The unphased NateTheHate2 said on Reddit, “The only unknown is whether the game will be day & date on PS5 with the Xbox release.”
How Xbox exclusivity has evolved
The often correct prognosticator doesn’t have confirmation of when it will arrive on PlayStation. Still, fewer Xbox exclusive games are being locked to Microsoft’s consoles and PCs for any period of time. With Halo: Combat Evolved, another celebrated Xbox franchise will be available on the PS5 immediately. Gears of War: Reloaded was already a cross-platform release in August 2025.
It’s worth noting that both titles are remakes or remasters of classic games. The next Fable is best described as a reboot, with significant additions to Albion and new gameplay mechanics. Other examples, like Forza Horizon 6, which will also be in the upcoming broadcast, won’t debut day one on the PS5.
Some analysts think that, considering Microsoft’s multi-platform emphasis, exclusivity will soon die. Xbox President Sarah Bond called the idea “antiquated,” with CEO Phil Spencer sharing a similar view. Gamers will watch the Developer Direct in hopes of learning the Fable release date for the Xbox and PS5.
