Gamer brags about leaked GTA 6 early access release, then sees virus ravage PC

Sharing legitimate GTA 6 leaks can earn a poster a high Karma score on Reddit. Unfortunately, one gamer discovered that an alleged early-access version was actually a malicious virus. While many readers believe NotAGoat3 was trolling, it serves as a warning for inevitable pre-release date hoaxes.
Documented by TheGamer, the user uploaded a screenshot to a GTA 6 subreddit that caused a stir. Fans saw an image from an installer, like those typically used by a prolific piracy group. NotAGoat3 claimed that the setup files were for a version of the anticipated Rockstar Games title. Poking fun at doubters, the hopeful player would soon become the brunt of a joke.
Following the post, Redditors found that the gamer made a plea for help in a security group. NotAGoat3 said, “Downloaded a setup executable from someone who I thought was trusted.” After attempting installation, the PC began running at a crawl. Symptoms included delayed sign-ins, a malfunctioning Windows key, and a ghosting mouse cursor.
The fan worried that only a factory reset would cure the system. However, after readers investigated the victim’s post history, they became convinced that the early-access GTA 6 leak and the virus were a ruse. Nevertheless, most gamers appreciated the attempt at humor.
Scammers to capitalize on the GTA 6 hype
It’s unlikely that the locked-down Rockstar Games would allow a complete build to escape the studio. Still, in March, a hacker who stole gameplay footage from the developer teased a more complete look at the project. From prison, Arion Kurtaj hinted that another individual had the game's source code. Regardless, it wouldn’t be playable without assets and extensive work.
As the GTA 6 release date approaches, the title will become even more popular with piracy supporters. Executables disguised as the game may have embedded viruses and malware. Hackers prey on players who either can’t afford the price of a retail copy or are anxious for its November debut.
