BlockBlasters, a verified title on Steam, was removed after it stole players' cryptocurrency to the tune of an estimated $150,000 over a period of one month. The game, released in July 2025, reportedly stole from 261 user accounts, including that of a Twitch streamer who was collecting donations for his cancer treatment.

Valve has removed the game BlockBlasters from its Steam platform after it stole crypto funds from players' wallets. BlockBlasters, a 2D platformer, was released on the platform on July 30, 2025. After a month without incident, it was updated in August with a crypto-draining malware that breached user wallets.

Discovery of the malware

The malicious code, uncovered by G-Data, contained a batch file for disabling anti-virus software on user systems, and collecting IP address, location information, and login data. Once the security software was offline, the malicious app would then begin slowly checking installed cryptocurrency wallets on the system and draining them.

According to BleepingComputer, there are unconfirmed reports of the threat actor being an Argentine immigrant currently residing in the U.S.

According to scam investigator ZachXBT on X, nearly $150,000 in crypto funds were reportedly stolen in the month the Malware was active. VXUnderground, another security group, has published a list of usernames that identified nearly 478 Steam accounts that were affected by the scam.

A notable victim

One of the more high-profile victims happened to be Twitch streamer Raivo "RastalandTV" Plavnieks, who got drained in real-time while raising funds for his cancer treatment. The streamer is currently undergoing treatment for stage-4 sarcoma.

After installing the game, following a request from one of his viewers, he lost $32,000 in crypto funds from his wallet. The high-profile incident is what finally drew Valve's attention, leading to BlockBlasters being removed from the store.
