Not all PS5 Pro enhanced games make players appreciate their pricey PlayStation console. Silent Hill f is the latest title that may frustrate gamers with its performance on the system. A Digital Foundry review finds that PSSR upscaling generates visual artifacts. The same issue plagues Konami’s Silent Hill 2 remake. As the Silent Hill f release date approaches, fans are already voicing their complaints.
Digital Foundry analyzed Silent Hill f performance on both the PS5 and PS5 Pro. The PS5 title offers a choice between quality and performance modes, prioritizing either image clarity or frame rates. However, the PS5 Pro only has one setting, with PSSR always active. The result is a higher frame rate with more defined textures at times, but those improvements come at a cost.
Unfortunately, the dreaded flickering reflections that annoy players in Silent Hill 2 return. The review also noted that upscaling likely interferes with shadows and ray-tracing effects. Despite some images benefiting from the console’s boosted GPU, other scenes are clouded by a surprising amount of noise.
Even with drawbacks, the survival horror game has some advantages on the PS5 Pro. The Silent Hill f review observed that frame rates often hit the 60 fps target, albeit with some drops in open areas. If players can overlook the artifacts, that’s significantly higher than the quality mode on the PS5.
Gamers demand more flexibility with PS5 Pro performance
Both Digital Foundry and PS5 Pro owners are now asking that Konami offer an option to disable PSSR. While the feature can maximize the console's potential, it’s often poorly implemented. Other players would accept PS5-level Silent Hill f performance if it meant less distracting shimmering.
Complaints about PS5 Pro enhanced games aren’t limited to Konami projects. Some recent titles, like Borderlands 4, lack support, leading to minimal improvements over the cheaper system.
