The Sony PlayStation 5 Pro (approx. $699 on Amazon) is likely going to support more games at 4K/120 fps or 8K/60 fps in future. According to the latest information from YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, Sony is reportedly developing a new version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which promises to deliver both less performance loss and enhanced visual quality through a brand-new AI model.
Besides the newly trained machine learning model, Sony is expected to decrease the render resolution to achieve its ambitious targets. Currently, the PlayStation 5 Pro renders games at a resolution no lower than 1,536 x 864 when upscaling them to the native 4K resolution found on most smart TVs. In comparison, Nvidia's DLSS 4 employs a lower render resolution of 1,280 x 720. If the console struggles to maintain a stable 120 fps at 4K despite PSSR2, Sony is reportedly planning to offer a 1440p mode with consistent 120 fps.
At this time, there is no confirmed release window for the first game featuring PSSR2 support. It also remains unclear whether Sony will explicitly market this upgraded upscaling technology or simply introduce games offering higher output resolutions and frame rates. At any rate, Sony’s plans to offer a 120 fps mode could be a response to the Nintendo Switch 2, which is set to run selected games at 120 fps – though at a significantly lower resolution.
