Lackluster Borderlands 4 performance, even on capable PCs, has led to mixed Steam reviews. Gamers with Sony’s flagship console are also reporting disappointing frame rates. The looter shooter is not yet a PS5 Pro Enhanced game, which is frustrating for players expecting smoother visuals.
PlayStation Lifestyle noted several Reddit posts that detail how the game runs on the PS5 Pro. In performance mode, frame rates initially meet the target of 60 fps. However, after several hours of gameplay, choppiness becomes more frequent. In addition to a possible memory leak, the graphics are sometimes blurry enough to resemble the scenes in Borderlands 3.
In quality mode, predictably, framerates take a further hit. Also, gamers have reported unusual bugs, including floating grass. The situation worsens with the split-screen option active, where the action slows to a crawl. Although the PS5 Pro has an upgraded graphical processor, this intensive mode can tax its limited CPU.
Another problem that affects all consoles is the lack of a FOV slider. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford recently surveyed players on social media, who overwhelmingly want the feature added. Without an available setting, zoomed-in gamers may struggle to spot and aim at targets in the distance.
Why Borderlands 4 is not PS5 Pro Enhanced
Some gamers and developers have lobbied for companies to release more PS5 Pro Enhanced games. Optimizing games now could benefit PS6 versions, with the system expected to arrive in 2027 or 2028. Even so, publishers hesitate to cater to the smaller player base on the $750 machine. Many PS5 Pro games still show improvement without an update, but gains seem fairly minimal in the latest Borderlands.
Despite the added effort it requires, fans are unhappy that a PS5 Pro patch wasn’t ready on the Borderlands 4 release date. Leading up to its debut, there were signs that PCs and consoles might struggle with the shooter. Pitchford also sounded less than optimistic about its performance on lower-end systems. It’s uncertain whether the developer plans to support the PS5 Pro in the future.
